ABOUT SITUATE

22-23

SITUATE 22-23 is a program dedicated to the creation of ambitious work by regionally based emerging and mid-career artists within the context of social engagement. It prioritises artistic excellence while also ensuring that the process and outcomes benefit both artists and communities alike. The 22-23 program is designed to address a growing global trend among artists interested in generating a diverse range of art experiences that reflect both their distinctive identities and their relationship to place and community. 

SITUATE 22-23 aims to:

Assist artists in developing and presenting new work that is influenced by place and social narratives and contributes to the creative capital of their communities.

Create authentic cultural experiences for communities through innovative placemaking and collaborative practise methods.

Assist artists in developing long-term, sustainable networks and careers on a national and international scale.

Six artists from Tasmania and four national artists will be mentored to create experimental and innovative artworks for Tasmanian communities. Participants will be challenged to embrace new ideas, develop bold concepts, consider larger-scale projects, and reimagine their practice. This two-year program will assist also them in developing as leaders, collaborating and interacting more effectively with diverse communities, and in managing, sustaining, and leveraging partnerships for mutual benefit.

During the program's development phase, nationally and internationally renowned artists, curators, and designers with extensive experience creating work for a variety of contexts will lead interdisciplinary laboratories.  Following that, participants will be guided as they refine their concepts within the context of a proposal framework for review by industry professionals. Submissions may be invited to a ‘research and development phase under the guidance of an experienced producer and artistic mentors. The program culminates with a commissioning phase in which accepted artists are invited to develop work for presentation.

Key Dates:

●           Lab 1: 21st - 25th March 2022

●           Lab 2: 9th - 13th May 2022

*Note: You must be able to attend the Labs in full over these dates to be considered eligible for the program.

Locations: The SITUATE 22-23 Labs will be held at Tasdance and around Tasmania.

Support: A contribution to travel costs and an honorarium of $1500 per lab will be provided for artists ($3000 in total). If artists progress to the Research and Development phase, they will receive $5000 in cash support, and a dedicated producer and mentor for up to 18 months.

The key phases of the program are as follows:

1.         Lab and Mentorship (6-8 months)

2.         Research and Development (4-6 months)

3.         Creative Development and Commissioning (3-6 months)

4.         Presentation (3-6 months).

SITUATE 22-23 will be led by Executive Producer Emma Porteus who has been instrumental in the development of SITUATE since 2017, including iterations such as SITUATE NORTH (2020), in Northern Tasmania and GENERATE GC, which was developed in collaboration with the City of Gold Coast (2019-21).

As Lead Artist Provocator, Mary Scott, a practising artist, will co-direct the artistic program. She has 25 years of expertise as a teacher and mentor to artists.

SITUATE is committed to working with and learning from First Nations artists and their communities. SITUATE is also committed to working with culturally diverse artists and artists with disabilities.
