India COLLINS
India Collins is a contemporary artist based in Far North Queensland. Born and raised in Canada, Collins studied Fine Arts in Montreal, Quebec. Her practice spans the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation, and textile design & manipulation.
Much of her work is centered around narratives that are intrinsically connected to the materials being used, harnessing personal histories, and creating work which prioritizes the sharing of knowledge and storytelling. Her work is often process-driven and consequently evolutionary in nature.
Collins’s work broadly addresses concepts which challenge the collective consciousness around themes relating to personal identity, positionality, gender, sexuality, trauma, environment, and other social constructs. Although many of her works address serious issues, they are often presented with a kitsch aesthetic and sense of whimsy. Drawing down on elements of pop culture, her use of bold imagery lures people in to reveal more serious stories.
Collins is particularly interested in how people engage with space and thrives to create work that challenges the viewers perception of how much their surrounding impacts on their state of mind as well as their social & emotional well-being. Through the fabrication of immersive and sensory environments which incorporate texture, lighting, movement and sound, her work becomes a catalyst for re-engaging people in new and unexpected ways.
Her work in many ways is a visceral and poetic exposition of human vulnerability
