Chris NG
Chris Ng is an emerging visual artist currently living and based in Mparntwe/Alice Springs. Their art practise is informed by their own personal experiences and identity as well as their immediate surroundings and natural, political and socio-economic landscape. They grew up in Sydney and after finishing school went into the field of Architecture for a few years, studying it at university and working in various firms. This background was a major catalyst for their consideration towards existing environments and a desire to produce works that in very tangible ways compliment and contribute positively to spaces.
Since moving away from the city to the remote town of Alice Springs in 2015, their work has grown to directly challenge the extreme social and cultural norms on display in Central Australia. In 2016 their sculpture “Pigs on Parade / White Sow-premacy” won the “Stories” section of Alice Springs' annual Advocate Art Award. In 2019 their large scale portrait “My friend and housemate” painted from reclaimed materials won the main “Excellence Award” of the 2019 Alice Springs Advocate Art Award.
In 2019 they were accepted into the Darmasiswa Scholarship Program, a language and cultural exchange program sponsored by the Indonesian Government. As part of this program they learnt how to create batik and in 2020 on return to Australia facilitated Batik workshops in remote desert communities for local women. As someone who often feels like a “minority” and struggles with personal issues of identity, it is important to Chris to continue listening to, supporting and amplifying voices of Indigenous Australians, POC, women and LGBTQI+ and other people that society often overlook and marginalises.
